Prominent, protruding ears, or the so-called “Bat ears”, is an abnormality of the external ear that can sometimes be hidden by a creative hair style. This undesirable feature can be easily corrected with a procedure called Otoplasty. This type of ear surgery is typically performed to bring ears closer to the head (“ pinning back “ of ears) or at times to reduce the size of large ears.
The ideal time to address this feature is between the ages of 5 to 6 years. This is when the cartilage of the ear is almost completely formed and prior to entering school. Early ear correction prevents children from suffering psychological problems as a result of teasing and insensitive remarks made by others. Adults may choose to correct this feature at any time.
To better understand your overall health, we will evaluate your medical history prior to surgery. In addition, a complete examination of your ears is made in order to take the most effective surgical approach. All issues such as shape and types of anesthesia used will be discussed.
Dr. Merheb will provide you with preoperative instructions that may include the elimination of specific drugs containing aspirin several weeks before surgery to minimize excess bleeding. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to prevent infection.
The areas that will be excised are marked and digital photographs are taken in order to document the amount of improvement after surgery.
Otoplasty can be performed in the office surgery suite as an outpatient procedure. The procedure can be performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia and Dr. Merheb will discuss this option with you. A small incision is made behind the ear and a small portion of the cartilage is removed, reshaping the ear to lay flatter against the head. The incision is inconspicuous once it has healed.
After the surgery, patients are required to wear a head dressing for about five days. Following the removal of the head dressing a head band is worn at night for about a month. Minimal discomfort can be expected following the procedure, which can be controlled with medications prescribed by your surgeon. Refraining from sleeping on the ears is required and patients are advised to use a very soft pillow. Showering and shampooing may begin after a few days. Expect two to three days of recovery before normal activities can be performed. Consult with Dr. Merheb before attempting any athletic or precarious activities that may affect the healing process.
