Dr. Merheb performs rhinoplasty in order to reshape the nose, the most prominent feature of the face. Even slight imperfections are easily noticeable by an untrained observer. Rhinoplasty is a type of plastic surgery that is used to improve the function (better breathing) and/or the appearance (to better blend with facial features) of a person's nose. Rhinoplasty is also commonly called a "nose job." The operation can be performed on all age groups, including teens and the elderly. It can be combined with other surgical procedures such as chin augmentation to enhance the aesthetic outcome.
A medical history along with a careful examination is conducted in order to evaluate your general health. We will discuss with you the way your nose can look in relation to your other facial features. Digital photographs and computer imaging allow Dr. Merheb to evaluate the appropriate procedure to achieve the desired results. Pre-operative instructions may include the elimination of certain drugs that contain aspirin in order to minimize the possibility of excess bleeding. Antibiotics may be prescribed before surgery to prevent infection.
Surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Incisions are made inside the nostrils. Sometimes, tiny, inconspicuous incisions are also made on the bit of skin that separates the nostrils. In most patients the surgery involves a reduction in size, change in tip shape or removal of a hump from the nose. To improve nasal breathing, a septoplasty may be performed in conjunction with the cosmetic changes. The cartilage that is removed may be used to improve the appearance and structure of the nose. It is not unusual to combine rhinoplasty with chin augmentation to improve the overall profile.
Following surgery a light weight nasal splint is placed on the nose to maintain its shape and is removed after seven days. Three skin stitches are removed on day 4 after surgery. Internal nasal splints may be inserted at the time of surgery to protect the septum. These are also removed on day 4 after surgery. Bruising occurs around the eyes, but begins to fade within a few days. Discoloration usually disappears in two weeks. Patients need to refrain from heavy strenuous activity for 2-3 weeks. If the nasal bones are shaped during surgery, patients will be unable to wear glasses for up to 6 weeks.
In summary, the recovery takes one to two weeks. Most people resume their normal activities within a week. Minimal discomfort can be expected following the procedure, which can be controlled with medications prescribed by your surgeon.
Your insurance company may pay for all or part of the costs associated with your surgery if it is performed as a result of nasal obstruction. It is recommended that you check with your carrier to determine if there is coverage.
