EAR CORRECTION SURGERY AND EARLOBE REPAIR

Merheb Surgical Arts IN Peoria & Pekin, IL

OTOPLASTY

Otoplasty, or ear correction, is a surgical procedure designed to correct prominent or protruding ears. This surgery aims to bring the ears closer to the head, commonly referred to as “pinning back” the ears.

The best time to address this issue is typically between the ages of 5 and 6, as the cartilage in the ear is nearly fully formed by this age. Correcting ear prominence before children enter school can help prevent psychological issues that may arise from teasing or insensitive remarks. For adults, this procedure offers the opportunity to enhance their appearance and boost their confidence at any time.

Before Surgery

During your complimentary consultation, Dr. Merheb will discuss your concerns and develop a customized treatment plan to achieve optimal results. We will review your medical history to assess your overall health. During a second appointment, our staff will provide detailed pre-operative instructions, discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure, and outline post-operative care.

How is the Procedure Performed?

Otoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia or intravenous (IV) sedation as an outpatient procedure. Dr. Merheb makes a small incision behind the ear and removes a portion of the cartilage to reshape the ear, allowing it to lie flatter against the head. The incision is designed to be inconspicuous once healed.

Post-Surgery Appearance and Care

After the surgery, patients are required to wear a head dressing for at least five days. Once the dressing is removed, a headband should be worn at night for approximately one month. Mild discomfort is common following the procedure and can be managed with medications prescribed by your surgeon.

EAR LOBE REPAIR

Ear lobe repair surgery restores the shape and appearance of an ear lobe that has been damaged, torn, or stretched.

How is the Procedure Performed?

Often performed under local anesthesia, Dr. Merheb makes incisions along the edges of the damaged area, excising the scar tissue and suturing to minimize scarring.

Post-Surgery Appearance and Care

Swelling and bruising is often mild and resolves in about a week. Sutures remain for 7-10 days. Ears will need to be re-pierced and earrings must be avoided for several months.
