Following wisdom teeth, the maxillary cuspid (upper eyetooth) is the second most common tooth to become impacted. However, any permanent tooth in the upper or lower jaw can become impacted. When a tooth is impacted, every effort is made to encourage it to erupt into its correct position within the dental arch.

Early detection of impacted teeth is crucial for successful treatment. The older the patient, the less likely it is that an impacted tooth will erupt naturally, even if there is enough space for it in the dental arch. A 3D cone beam scan is often necessary to determine the location of the impacted tooth in relation to surrounding teeth, nerves, and sinus cavities.

Dr. Merheb will collaborate with your dentist and orthodontist to address the impacted tooth effectively. Ideally, the procedure will involve surgically accessing the impacted tooth, clearing a path, and attaching a gold bracket and chain to the crown of the tooth. Sutures will be placed to aid in healing, and a soft diet will be necessary for a few days. Your orthodontist will connect the chain to the wire of your braces, and over time, it will be adjusted to move the tooth into place.

What to Expect from Surgery to Expose and Bracket an Impacted Tooth

The surgery to expose and bracket an impacted tooth is a straightforward procedure that is performed in our office under appropriate anesthesia. You can expect minimal bleeding from the surgical sites after the procedure. While some discomfort is normal following surgery, most patients find that over-the-counter pain medication is sufficient to manage any pain. Initially, a soft diet is recommended, but you may resume your regular diet as soon as you feel comfortable chewing. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled seven to ten days after the surgery to evaluate the healing process and ensure that you are maintaining good oral hygiene.
